You find yourself constantly tugging the steering wheel to the left just to keep the vehicle from drifting into the shoulder. Perhaps you have noticed that while you are driving perfectly straight, your steering wheel is cocked at an awkward ten-o'clock angle. Or maybe, during a routine trip to the air pump, you glance at your front tires and realize the inner edges are worn down to the cords while the outer edges look almost brand new.

What is a Wheel Alignment?

When your car leaves the factory, its suspension is tuned to a precise set of geometric angles. These angles ensure that the tires maintain the largest possible "contact patch" with the road while providing stable, predictable steering. When you take your vehicle to a shop, the technician will use a specialized computer to measure these angles down to the hundredth of a degree. You should always ask for the alignment printout. Here is how to interpret it:

  1. Specified Range: This is the manufacturer’s "sweet spot" for your specific make and model.
  2. Actual/Initial Measurements: This shows where your car was when it rolled into the shop.
  3. Final Measurements: This confirms the car is now within the "green" zone.

If your numbers are in the red, your car's geometry is literally fighting the road.
