The Physics of a Wet Track: Finding the Rain Line

A wet track does more than just reduce overall grip; it completely changes where the grip is located. On a dry day, the fastest way around a corner is the traditional racing line, where layers of rubber have been bedded into the pavement.

However, when it rains, that rubberized line becomes incredibly slick, acting almost like ice. To stay fast, you must find the rain line:

  • Move Off-Line: Look for more abrasive, grey pavement. This usually means driving a car-width or two outside the traditional rubbered-in groove.
  • Avoid the Curbs: Stay off painted curbs and white lines. These surfaces offer almost zero traction when wet and can send a car into a spin instantly.
