How to Transport a Race Car to the Track
For many amateur racers, the drive-to-track era eventually comes to an end. This transition usually happens when the car becomes too modified for comfortable street use, when the risk of a mechanical failure leaving you stranded becomes too high, or when you simply need to carry more tools and tires than a trunk can hold.
Moving to a trailer is a major milestone that changes your race weekend from a stressful commute into a professional-feeling operation. However, towing brings its own set of technical challenges and safety requirements. This guide covers the essentials of getting your car to the grid reliably and safely.
1. Tow Vehicle Capacity: Look Beyond the Rating
The most common mistake new racers make is buying a tow vehicle based solely on the maximum tow capacity listed in the owner’s manual. Total weight includes more than just the car and the trailer; it includes several five-gallon jugs of fuel, spare wheels, a heavy toolbox, a floor jack, and all your personal gear.
The 20% Rule
Aim for a tow vehicle with a capacity at least 20% higher than your expected total load. If your truck is rated for 5,000 lbs and your car and trailer combined weigh 4,800 lbs, you are operating at the absolute limit. This leads to transmission overheating, poor braking, and a phenomenon called the tail wagging the dog on the highway.
Essential Towing Upgrades
- Brake Controller: If your trailer has electric brakes, a controller is mandatory to ensure the trailer helps slow itself down.
- Transmission Cooler: Heat is the number one killer of tow vehicles. An auxiliary cooler is a cheap insurance policy for long hauls.
- Mirrors: Ensure you have extended towing mirrors so you can see the entire length of the trailer and the lanes beside you.

2. Choosing Your Trailer: Open vs. Enclosed
For grassroots racers, the choice usually comes down to budget, storage space, and the capabilities of the tow vehicle.
Open Trailers
Open trailers are the standard starting point. They are lighter, easier to tow with a mid-size SUV or half-ton truck, and offer better visibility. They are also significantly cheaper and easier to store in a standard driveway. The downside is that your car and gear are exposed to weather, road debris, and potential theft.
Enclosed Trailers
An enclosed trailer serves as a mobile garage and locker room. It keeps your car clean and allows you to store tools and spares securely. However, they act like a giant sail in the wind, significantly increasing fuel costs and requiring a more powerful tow vehicle—usually a three-quarter-ton truck (2500 series).
Why Tandem Axles Matter
Regardless of whether you go open or enclosed, look for a tandem-axle trailer. Having four wheels instead of two provides much better stability at highway speeds and offers a margin of safety if you experience a tire blowout.

3. Tie-Down Equipment and Strategy
Securing the car is a safety-critical task. Never use hardware-store utility straps. Invest in high-quality, two-inch wide ratcheting straps with a break strength significantly higher than the weight of the car.
Chassis vs. Wheel Straps
- Chassis Tie-Downs: These hook to the frame or factory shipping holes, compressing the car’s suspension. While this prevents the car from bouncing, it puts constant tension on your straps and the car's suspension components.
- Wheel/Tire Straps: Often called lasso straps, these secure the tires to the trailer deck. This allows the car’s suspension to work naturally over bumps while keeping the vehicle firmly planted. Most modern racers prefer this method.
The X-Pattern and the 10-Mile Check
When possible, cross your straps in an X-shape. This prevents the car from shifting side-to-side during cornering. Most importantly, always stop and check your strap tension after the first 10 miles of driving. The car often settles on its suspension, which can cause straps to go slack.

4. Loading and Weight Distribution
How you position the car on the trailer determines how the setup handles on the road. The goal is to have approximately 10% to 15% of the total trailer weight resting on the hitch of the tow vehicle (tongue weight).
- Too Far Back: If the car is too far toward the rear, the trailer will be tail-heavy, which causes dangerous sway at high speeds.
- Too Far Forward: This puts excessive load on the tow vehicle’s rear suspension, reducing steering effectiveness and making the front end feel floaty.
The Visual Check: The tow vehicle should sit level or have a very slight squat. If the rear of the truck is dragging or the front wheels look unweighted, you need to reposition the car on the trailer.
5. The Paddock as a Mobile Workshop
One of the greatest benefits of towing is the ability to bring a comprehensive kit of spares and tools. This can turn your pit space into a high-functioning workshop. Your basic track kit should include:
- Full Spare Set: At least one set of mounted tires (rain tires or a backup set of slicks).
- Floor Jack and Stands: A rapid-pump aluminum floor jack and four sturdy jack stands.
- Fluids: Spare engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and gear oil.
- Fuel: At least 10 to 20 gallons of track-safe fuel in high-quality jugs.
- Wear Items: Spare brake pads, serpentine belts, and spark plugs.
6. Practice and Maintenance
Do not wait until 5:00 a.m. on race day to learn how to hook up a trailer or back it into a tight space. Practice loading and unloading the car before you need to do it under pressure.
Trailer Maintenance Checklist
- Tire Age: Trailer tires frequently dry-rot before the tread wears out. Replace them every five to six years regardless of how they look.
- Wheel Bearings: These should be greased annually. A seized bearing on the highway is a guaranteed way to miss your race.
- Lights: Before every trip, verify that all running lights, turn signals, and brake lights are functioning perfectly.
Transporting your race car is an extension of your racing program. When you arrive at the track with a secure car and an organized set of tools, you are in a much better position to focus on your driving and improve your lap times.
