How to Improve Corner Exit Speed
In the world of amateur and grassroots racing, there is a common trap: the hero entry. We have all seen it—and most of us have done it—braking as late as possible, diving into the corner with the tires screaming, and feeling like a pro.
The problem is that an aggressive entry usually leads to a slow, messy exit.
If you want to drop your lap times significantly without spending a dime on engine modifications, you need to focus on corner exit speed. A gain of just 2 mph at the exit of a turn can translate into a massive advantage by the end of the following straightaway. Because that speed is carried for the entire length of the straight, it is often the most valuable time you can find on track.

The Philosophy: Slow In, Fast Out
The biggest mistake new racers make is carrying too much speed into the corner entry. If you enter too hot, the vehicle will usually understeer (plow wide) or require heavy mid-corner braking to stay on the pavement. Both scenarios prevent you from getting back on the throttle early.
By braking slightly earlier or more firmly on entry, you allow the chassis to take a set. This creates a stable platform that allows you to get back to 100% throttle much sooner. In racing, the person who gets to full throttle first usually wins the straightaway. More throttle isn't always faster if it causes wheelspin, so the goal is to be in a position where you can apply power consistently.
Geometry: The Power of the Late Apex
To get a great exit, you need to change the shape of the corner. Instead of a symmetrical arc, aim for a late apex.
- What it is: Clipping the inside of the curb slightly after the midpoint of the turn.
- Why it works: A late apex allows you to square off the corner. By rotating the car more sharply during the slowest part of the turn, you can point the nose toward the exit curb earlier.
- The Result: Because the car is already pointed down the straight, you can straighten the steering wheel sooner. The straighter the wheels, the more grip is available for acceleration.
The Relationship Between Your Hands and Feet
Tires have a limited amount of budgeted grip, often called the Traction Circle. They can use that grip for turning or for accelerating, but they struggle to do both at the same time. Smooth inputs are vital here because sudden steering or throttle corrections reduce stability.

As you begin to apply the throttle, you must simultaneously unwind the steering wheel. If your hands are still turned tight, your foot should not be on the floor. Straightening the wheel increases the tire's contact patch for longitudinal grip. If you mash the throttle while the wheels are still turned, you will likely induce understeer or oversteer. Both require you to lift off the gas, which kills your momentum.
Vision: Look Through the Corner
Your car follows your eyes. Many amateur racers suffer from target fixation, staring at the pavement directly in front of the hood. To improve your exit, look toward the next section of track rather than the apex itself.
Before you even reach the apex, your eyes should be searching for the exit curb or even the furthest point down the next straightaway. This helps your brain calculate the necessary steering angle and throttle application subconsciously, making the exit feel more natural and fluid.
Prioritize the Money Corners
Not every corner is equally important. If you try to maximize every single exit, you will likely overwork your tires and brakes. You should prioritize your exit speed on the turns that lead onto the longest straights. These are the money corners where lap times are truly made.
It is often worth sacrificing entry speed and taking a slower line through a technical section if it puts you in the perfect position to floor it onto a half-mile straight. A small mistake on a corner leading to a straightaway is penalized every foot of the way down that straight.
Car Setup and Consumables
While technique is the priority, car setup can limit your exit speed. Even a perfectly driven car cannot overcome poor tire pressures or a lack of traction.
- Tire Pressures: If your tires are too hot or have too much pressure, they will lose longitudinal grip, leading to wheelspin. Use a tire pressure gauge or pyrometer immediately after a session to ensure you are not over-inflating the tires.
- Alignment: Increasing negative camber can help the car turn mid-corner, allowing you to get to the throttle sooner. However, too much camber can reduce the contact patch when you are trying to accelerate in a straight line.
- Limited Slip Differential (LSD): If you are racing a car with an open differential, power will go to the wheel with the least grip (the inside wheel). Upgrading to a mechanical LSD is one of the few power modifications worth the money for grassroots racers because it directly improves corner exit traction.

Practical Checklist for Your Next Track Day
- Identify Targets: Find the longest straightaway on the track map.
- Brake Early: In the corner leading onto that straight, try braking five feet earlier than usual to focus on the exit.
- Position the Car: Ensure the car is rotated and pointing at the exit curb before you commit to full throttle.
- Eyes Up: Look for the exit curb before you have even reached the apex.
- Smooth Unwinding: Progressively add throttle as you straighten the steering wheel.
- Compare Data: Use a lap timer or GPS data to compare exit speeds. You will often find that a lower minimum mid-corner speed results in a much higher top speed at the end of the straight.
Focusing on the exit is about discipline. It requires the patience to wait a fraction of a second longer before getting on the gas so that when you do, you can stay on it. This efficient driving style is easier on the tires, easier on the brakes, and is the most consistent way to see your lap times drop.
