Heavy-Duty Differential Diagnostics
Course: Heavy-Duty Driveline Diagnostics
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify auditory indicators of gear and bearing fatigue.
- Detect lubricant loss points to prevent component seizure.
- Differentiate between drivetrain vibration sources and internal differential failure.

Field Assessment of Differential Wear
Rear differential failure starts with subtle signals. Ignoring them causes catastrophic driveline seizure. Listen for whining, humming, or growling during acceleration or coasting. These sounds fluctuate with vehicle speed. Pitch changes suggest damaged ring and pinion gears or worn carrier bearings.

Inspect for fluid leakage immediately. Check the pinion seal, cover gasket, and axle seals. Low lubricant levels accelerate heat buildup. This destroys gear surface hardening and ruins bearings.
Vibration is another critical indicator. Tires and driveshafts cause similar issues. Differential-specific vibration often correlates directly with load changes. Do not diagnose by symptom alone. Verify the source before disassembly. Proper isolation reduces repair costs and downtime.

- Road test to correlate noise with specific speeds and loads.
- Inspect the housing and seals for moisture or active drips.
- Analyze fluid for metallic debris or a burnt odor.
- Isolate bearing noise using a stethoscope while the vehicle is on a lift.
PRO-TIP: Metallic flakes in gear oil indicate internal component failure; perform an immediate teardown.
