Ford Liftgate Ajar Diagnostic Guide
Course: Ford Advanced Electronics: Liftgate Latch Service
Learning Outcomes
- Identify mechanical obstructions preventing full latch engagement.
- Verify electronic door-position signals using diagnostic software.
- Determine when internal latch switch failure requires assembly replacement.
Diagnosing False Liftgate-Ajar Warnings

A Liftgate Ajar warning on a physically closed Ford indicates a signal disconnect. Technicians must differentiate between mechanical interference and electronic failure. First, rule out physical causes. Misaligned strikers or seal debris prevent the latch from hitting the second detent. If the gate is flush and secure, the issue is electrical.
Modern Ford latches integrate door-position switches directly into the assembly. A failed internal switch or harness resistance sends a constant open signal to the Body Control Module (BCM). Do not simply clear codes. You must verify the signal path. If the BCM receives an open circuit signal while the latch is physically closed, the latch assembly is the primary failure point.

Diagnostic Protocol:
- Inspect the striker and latch for physical damage or debris.
- Confirm the gate sits flush via a visual alignment check.
- Use a scan tool to monitor the Liftgate Switch PID in the BCM.
- Manually cycle the latch with a tool to observe PID state changes.
- Test for continuity and ground at the latch connector.
Pro-Tip: Check for frayed wiring in the liftgate-to-body harness bellows before replacing an expensive latch assembly.
