Differential assemblies manage extreme torque. Lubrication is the only barrier against friction. Any leak signals system failure. Seepage appears as an oily film collecting dust. Active leaks produce droplets. Monitor seeps; repair leaks immediately.
Neglect causes fluid starvation. Bearings pit. Gear teeth score. Repair costs jump from simple seals to full rebuilds. Heat is the primary enemy. Low fluid increases operating temperatures and thins remaining oil. If levels drop below pinion bearings, catastrophic failure is imminent. Friction can weld internal components together.
Visual inspection is your first defense. Inspect the pinion seal, axle seals, and housing cover. Dampness attracts grime, creating a sludge signature. Never wait for mechanical noise. Whining or grinding indicates permanent gear damage has already occurred. Act while the repair is still a seal, not a gear set.

- Wipe the housing clean with solvent to isolate the active leak source.
- Remove the fill plug to verify fluid is level with the fill hole.
- Inspect the breather vent for clogs or kinks causing internal pressure.
- Check drained fluid for silver or gold shavings indicating internal failure.
